Quail hunters from east-central Kansas have formed the newest chapter of Quail Forever. Officially known as the Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever, the new committee is focusing time and resources on the habitat requirements of bobwhite quail in Lyon County and surrounding areas.
“Simply stated, the Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever is a dedicated group of volunteers who are deeply rooted in the traditions of Kansas quail hunting,” said Marc Glades, south region field manager for Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever. “The local leadership for the chapter is outstanding and we look forward to working with them as the newest addition to ‘The Habitat Organization'."
Located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, an area well-known for its tallgrass prairie and historical abundance of upland game birds, the Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever has formed amidst encouraging signs for bobwhite quail. Recovering from historic low populations due to drought conditions plaguing the state since 2012, areas within and surrounding Lyon County posted a 127 percent increase in the state’s quail index compared to 2013. Boasting the highest population densities of quail in the state, the Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever is eager to build upon this positive trend.
“Quail hunting is an annual ritual in this area of Kansas, something which our chapter and local residents are very passionate about,” said Nik Roth, elected president for the Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever. “We are excited to act as a resource for local farmers and landowners who are making an effort to foster bobwhite quail numbers. Our chapter would like to extend a warm welcome to any new committee members interested in joining our wildlife efforts. We want this to be a community endeavor.”

The Lyon County Chapter of Quail Forever chapter has elected Nik Roth of Emporia as president and banquet chair, Justin Anderson of Hartford as habitat chair, Dan Johnson of Americus as treasurer, and Steven Foster of Emporia as youth/education chair.

The local chapter is planning to host their annual membership fundraising banquet on January 31, 2015, at the American Legion in Emporia, Kansas, starting at 5:00 p.m.
