Quail hunters and conservationists in Texas have added three Quail Forever chapters across the state’s northern tier. Officially known as the Top O’ Texas, Adobe Walls, and Lone Star Chapters of Quail Forever, the new committees are focused on boosting quail populations through local habitat improvements, while providing outdoor education opportunities for area youth.
“Our new chapters have a definite passion for wildlife habitat conservation and connecting youth to the great outdoors,” said Laura McIver, Quail Forever’s regional field representative in Texas. “The potential exists for Texas to be the number one quail hunting destination in North America, but local conservation groups such as Quail Forever need to be involved. This is exciting news for Quail Forever in Texas, I hope our mission and impact will continue to expand throughout the state.”
The formation of three Quail Forever chapters in the state comes at a crucial point for Texas quail. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recently awarded grants to put $4 million worth of quail habitat conservation on the ground, using a special appropriation by the Texas Legislature to help bring back the quail. These appropriations will be allocated as part of the Texas Upland Game Bird Strategic Plan with three focus areas identified in the state. The newly formed chapters hope to work closely with state agencies and other partners to positively impact quail populations.
