Bird hunters in The Sunshine State should continue to see healthy bobwhite quail populations because of the extensive work done by dedicated landowners and Quail Forever chapters. Barring any catastrophic weather events, the populations remain stable on public and private lands where best management practices are implemented.

WEATHER AND CONDITIONS

Greg Hagan, Quail Biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, says, “Overall, Florida experienced favorable weather conditions resulting in above average over-winter survival.”

Hagan believes spring and summer weather conditions were optimal for quail, saying, “Aside from areas impacted by tropical downpours, weather has been reasonable which, in turn, has created strong nesting and cover conditions.  If conditions hold, we are anticipating above average nesting and brood rearing success.”

HABITAT, BROODS AND COUNTS

Hagan says, “On areas implementing quality bobwhite management, the habitat is in excellent condition, and birds have been well positioned throughout the breeding season. Barring any additional tropical systems or unforeseen weather events, populations and habitat are in good shape heading into the fall.”

TOP SPOTS

For those interested in hunting quail in Florida this fall, Hagan says, “Historically, Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) located in the Northwest, Northeast, and Southwest regions support quality bobwhite populations.  Working your dogs through recently burned areas (< 18 months) usually yields the highest success.”

INSIDER TIP

For those hunting on WMAs, Hagan advises, “If you’re planning to hunt on one of Florida’s many public WMAs, please consult the WMA brochure specific to the area you plan to hunt before heading afield as many areas have differing season dates, rules and regulations.  Information can be found at: https://myfwc.com/hunting/wma-brochures/.”
