Historic drought and triple-digit heat have done little to slow Ridgecrest Quail Forever

by David Gutierrez, Quail Forever Regional Representative

Historic drought and triple-digit heat have done little to slow Ridgecrest Quail Forever in Ridgecrest, California. Coming off the heels of their most successful fundraising banquet to date, the chapter has organized two water-hauling projects to fill 40 wildlife guzzlers in El Paso Mountains, Rand Mountains, Spangler Hills, and Lava Mountain, providing essential water for desert wildlife. Chapter members used personal vehicles outfitted with water tanks, and Hensel Phelps Construction contributed a large water truck to assist with filling the drinkers. Members of the nearby High Desert Quail Forever, in Victorville, California, joined the fun.

Not limiting their efforts to water hauling, Ridgecrest Quail Forever also hosted a two-date Rattlesnake Avoidance Training clinic, where hunters, hikers, and other dog owners brought nearly 70 dogs for training, with the hope that their canine friends would not fall victim to one of the many species of venomous snakes in the West.

Ridgecrest QF will continue their water hauls throughout the hottest part of the year to ensure quail, chukar, and other wildlife have safe and reliable places to quench their thirst.
