Virginia – No Southern Hospitality for Quail Populations

Forecast: Marc Puckett, small game project leader for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, notes that the winter weather was tough on the quail, but brooding conditions were good throughout the summer months.

“We had 34 quail hunter cooperators who reported on their hunts from 2013. They averaged finding 0.41 coveys per hour, meaning on average it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to find a covey of quail,” said Puckett. This is the statewide average, but things tend to be better in southeastern Virginia where it takes about 1.5 hours to find a covey.”

On a statewide level, quail continue to decline in Virginia due to lack of habitat. Private property in southeast Virginia are bright spots for quail hunters in the state, but access to these managed properties for the average hunter is not realistic.

Season Dates: November 8, 2014 through January 31, 2015

Field Notes: In addition to Virginia’s Quail Recovery Initiative, the state has developed a Director’s Quail Advisory Group to help address the decline of quail throughout the state. Prescribed burning is now a cost-share program being offered within the state which could positively influence quail numbers when used correctly.
