Colorado - Recovering from Mother Nature’s Fury

Forecast: The 2014/15 season is a mirror image of the previous year- Colorado makes a slow climb back from a statewide drought, followed by a disastrous fall flood. Despite the conditions, Colorado’s southern quail range may show slight improvements from 2013, reports Ed Gorman of the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

“Bobwhite hunting in the South Platte River corridor is expected to be spotty in 2014,” said Gorman. “In some locations, bobwhites appear to be doing well, but across the region, populations are in recovery mode. In the southern Colorado scaled quail range, conditions have improved, but not uniformly across the range. It is very likely that scaled and bobwhite populations will be somewhat spotty in the southeast, but improved from 2013.”

Season Dates: All seasons start on November 8, 2014. Season closures depend on the region, see link to the below.

Daily Bag Limit: 8 of each species (Bobwhite, Scaled, and Gambel's quail)

Possession Limit: 24 of each species (Bobwhite, Scaled, and Gambel's quail)

Field Notes: Colorado Division of Wildlife employees have received several reports of good, albeit late hatches of scaled quail, which are presumably due to the late summer precipitation. Focus on areas within the quail range where weather created ideal conditions for bug production.
