Kentucky – Focus on CREP for Quality Hunting

Forecast: Between 2013 and 2014, Kentucky’s Rural Mail Carrier Survey showed a 15 percent decrease statewide in the number of quail observed. Showing a slight downturn, the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky will still offer some great hunting opportunities when the season opens in November.

“This is Kentucky’s second consecutive year of outstanding conditions during the breeding season,” reports Ben Robinson, small game program wildlife biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “These conditions should result in more birds on the ground for the 2014 hunting season, especially in areas with quality habitat west of Interstate 65.”

One particular standout area in the state is Peabody Wildlife Management Area. Additionally, the Sinclair unit is open under statewide regulations and could produce some great harvest opportunities in 2014. Underutilized quail hunting prospects include private ground enrolled in the CREP Program near Bowling Green, Glasgow, and Mammoth Cave areas.
