South Carolina
Forecast: In 2016, South Carolina recorded its first increase in their Spring Whistle Count Survey in seven years. According to small game program leader Michael Hook with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, it was the highest recorded number of any whistle count since 2013. Also, anecdotally, there have been reports of more quail sightings than in years past.

A warm spring with adequate rain turned habitat green early, though South Carolina’s summer turned out hot and dry. “Overall, I would think that conditions would have been favorable for good brood production and, provided there isn’t massive flooding this fall as was the case last year,” Hook said, “I would think that the quail should be doing just fine going into hunting season.”

In regard to where to find quail, Hook suggested the Piedmont would be a good place to start. “The Spring Whistle Surveys were particularly good in the western Piedmont this year,” he said, “and as always the upper coastal plain will be tough to beat.”

Hook also notes four quail focal areas, part of the South Carolina Bobwhite Quail Initiative, that have been created in the state, and monitoring these areas began this summer. “We will continue monitoring as the changes occur and hopefully the birds will respond well,” he said.
