Texas
Forecast: Texas upland game bird program leader Robert Perez anticipates an outstanding quail hunting season this year. “This doesn’t happen too often in Texas, so if you’ve been thinking about coming to Texas to quail hunt, this is the year to do it,” he said. Last year, Texas experienced great quail production in each major eco-region traditionally hunted. Production was great again this year in the Rolling Plains and South Texas for bobwhites and in the Trans Pecos for scaled quail.

Most of the state experienced below average summer temperatures and above average summer rainfall, which, with this combination, equated to high quail production and survival. “All field reports have been extremely positive,” Perez said. “We are looking at a boom year in most areas.”

There have been many field reports of multiple age classes throughout the summer months, according to Perez. “The portion of the Gulf Coastal Prairies that is hunted is much smaller than the eco-region and was a little too wet during the nesting season” he said. “We suspect that production may be lower than average, but this area had great carryover from last year and will still provide some quality hunts.”

The outlook is positive in all core Texas quail hunting destinations. “Texas does not have expansive public lands open to hunting but there are a few choice areas that offer quail hunting on certain dates with a hunting license and an Annual Public Hunting Permit,” Perez advised. These include the Matador and Gene Howe WMAs in the Rolling Plains Region, the Chaparral and Daughtrey WMAs in south Texas and Elephant Mountain and Black Gap WMAs (scaled quail) in the Trans Pecos.
