Washington
Forecast: Most of Washington’s quail harvest occurs in the eastern part of the state, but pockets of birds exist in western Washington around the southern end of Puget Sound. Mountain quail seasons in eastern Washington are closed to protect limited populations, but the introduced population in the Mason/Kitsap County area supports limited harvest for dedicated hunters willing to put in the time.

Last year harvest data showed a 14 percent increase from the 2014 season, according to small game section manager Angelique Curtis with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. Hunter participation was also up 7 percent from last season. Most of the 2015 harvest occurred in eastern Washington in Douglas, Grant, Kittitas, and Yakima counties. In western Washington, Kitsap yielded the highest harvest.

Favorable spring weather in 2015 led to an increase in quail populations. “Fall of 2015 was mild and we again had good spring weather which indicates we should see an increase in brood-rearing success and overall populations,” Curtis said.

In eastern Washington summer was hot with average to below average rainfall. In western Washington it was unusually warm with below average rainfall in some areas. But due to a mild spring, the quail populations should not have been negatively affected by the summer weather. The breeding bird survey index for Washington suggests that California quail populations have been increasing, also reflected in the annual harvest per hunter trend data.

“We anticipate a good quail season this year,” Curtis said. “There is every indication that this year will look much like last year in terms of harvest. Based on last year’s harvest results in eastern Washington Grant, Douglas and Kittitas counties look very promising.”

Thanks to the state’s Feel Free to Hunt and Register to Hunt programs, thousands of private acres in Washington are accessible to hunting. “There are plenty of underutilized sites that house good quail populations for hunters to choose from,” Curtis advised.
