Forecast: Recovering from extremely low population levels, weather for quail production and nesting cover over the spring season was relatively good, reports Roger Applegate, wildlife population biologist for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Quail populations across the state are generally poor, mostly due to habitat limitations.
Looking to the future, Tennessee has recently finalized their
Northern Bobwhite Quail Restoration Plan (seven years in the making), in efforts to establish regional populations across the state. The plan uses the concept of anchor and focus, an approach unique to TWRA. Anchor areas will permanently maintain superior habitat for bobwhites and should be a minimum of 1,000 contiguous acres in size.
