Forecast: Due to an unseasonably warm winter and favorable spring weather, nesting season got off to an early start in Florida. According to Dr. Theron Terhune, game bird program director at Tall Timbers Research Station, mid-season nest and brood production is slightly higher than it has been in the last three years.
“Habitat conditions across the state are favorable and birds were well-positioned going into the nesting season,” said northern bobwhite coordinator Greg Hagan with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. “However, significant tropical moisture has impacted numerous areas of the state during the latter part of summer potentially impacting brood production and late season hatch.”
Overall, properties implementing favorable bobwhite management should have good bird numbers and hunting success, Hagan advised.
