Forecast: Though Oregon surveys suggest California quail populations dropped slightly from last year, upland game bird coordinator Dave Budeau states they remain above the most recent 5-year and 10-year averages. Mountain quail numbers appear to be similar to last year.
Near normal precipitation during fall and winter improved habitat, but drought continues across much of the state. “A couple of late cool and wet weather events, including snow at higher elevations in May and even June, impacted chick survival for some species,” Budeau said, “but both species of quail are later nesters, so the weather was thought to impact these species less.
“Expect an average season for both species of quail,” Budeau advised, “or even a little better than average for California quail.”
Good California quail hunting can be found across the state in suitable habitat, but most of the harvest occurs in the eastern two-thirds of the state, east of the Cascade Mountains. Mountain quail season is not open statewide. Most of the mountain quail harvest in Oregon occurs in the southwest portion of the state.
