Oklahoma
Forecast: Oklahoma’s August 2016 quail roadside survey data showed that the statewide quail index is up 60.4 percent from the 26-year average and up 50 percent from 2015, according to quail habitat biologist Kyle Johnson with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Oklahoma’s north-central region is the only region that did not see an increase in quail numbers from last year. Quail numbers, in general, are much higher in western Oklahoma than eastern Oklahoma, since the soils and moisture regimes within the western portion of the state are more conducive for the species.

The majority of Oklahoma has experienced three consecutive years of favorable nesting season weather. As a result, quail numbers have increased each year within most regions, though north-central Oklahoma is currently behind 2015 in quail production. “Overall, the 2015-16 quail season was good to excellent,” Johnson said, “especially within western Oklahoma, all indications show the upcoming 2016-17 season to at least equal what was observed last year.”

Public areas in the southwest, including the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, may be a good destination for hunters wishing to hunt western Oklahoma, Johnson advised. Public areas in northwest Oklahoma will also be popular destinations for 2016 quail hunters, he believes.
