Upland hunters and conservationists in Louisiana have formed the second chapter of Quail Forever in the state. Officially known as the Southwest Louisiana Chapter of Quail Forever, local volunteers have set their sights on public and private land partnerships to positively influence bobwhite quail numbers, while providing opportunities for youth to experience the great outdoors.
“Our chapter was formed by a group of concerned hunters who want to restore the tradition of quail hunting in southern Louisiana,” stated Paul Frischhertz, elected president for the Southwest Louisiana Chapter of Quail Forever. “The chapter is anxious to partner with state and federal agencies to develop and implement upland habitat improvements for quail focus areas in our region. Additionally, the chapter would like to introduce more young people to the vast amount of outdoor opportunities in our region, including quail hunting.”
Following the formation of the Southwest Louisiana Chapter of Quail Forever, committee volunteers and various state agency partners were provided a tour of the Kisatchie National Forest Vernon Bobwhite Emphasis Area. Part of a 10-year project that will include patch burning, openings, native plantings and other efforts meant to boost bobwhite quail production and survival, chapter representatives voiced their interest in helping manage this area through future donations and Quail Forever habitat work days.
“Volunteers in southwest Louisiana have transformed their passion for upland hunting and a concern for bobwhite quail into a local chapter of Quail Forever; it’s exciting to be a part of,” explained John Wallace, regional representative for Quail Forever in Louisiana. “With the resurgence of bobwhite quail in nearby states and a driven group of chapter volunteers, southwest Louisiana has a brighter future ahead for quail hunting and conservation.”

- The Southwest Louisiana Chapter of Quail Forever has elected Paul Frischhertz of Lake Charles as president, Michael Fontenot of Lake Charles as banquet chair, Leon Fast of Moss Bluff as habitat chair, David Yarbro of Sulphur as youth chair, Jesse Vidrine of Lake Charles as treasurer, and Scotty Schadler of Moss Bluff as vice president.
- The chapter will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, June 14, at 6:00 p.m. at Walk-on’s Bistreaux & Bar (5313 Common Street – Lake Charles, LA 70607).
